Meet our Pembrey School Fairtrade Committee

Our Pembrey School Fairtrade Committee helps to raise awareness of the importance of Fairtrade. We have promoted Fairtrade ingredients by making a variety of delicious treats such as flapjacks, brownies, smoothies and milkshakes which we have sold to our pupils and the wider community.

During Fairtrade fortnight we encourage the teachers to teach their classes about different Fairtrade products and why Fairtrade is important.

We have encouraged people to buy Fairtrade products by providing them with informative leaflets and posters.

The Committee have regular meetings in school to discuss how we will raise awareness next. We have now been a Fairtrade School since March 2013 and hold the Fair-achiever Award which is the highest of the three awards.

Fairtrade fortnight - March 2016

We have been involved in lots of events this term to raise awareness of Fairtrade within our school.

Firstly, the Year 2 class worked really hard on their Fairtrade class assembly and performed it confidently to the whole school. It was really informative and the children learned an awful lot about what Fairtrade is all about, which products are available and why supporting Fairtrade is important.

Ysgol Glan Y Mor hosted a Fairtrade transition day and invited lots of the Llanelli schools to attend. The year 5 and 6 members of the  Fairtrade Committee and the Eco committee went, along with Miss Honour, and had lots of fun attending the different workshops and finding out about life in underdeveloped countries.  There was a Ghanaian master drummer, who talked about cocoa production, and a Ugandan coffee producer who talked all about his life in Uganda.  They also had workshops called ‘Scientific Bananas’ and ‘the paper bag challenge’.

We held a Fairtrade Breakfast event in school selling Fairtrade chocolate oaty smoothies and Fairtrade flapjacks. They were delicious and the Fairtrade Committee had lots of fun making them! We raised £67 towards some Fairtrade resources for our school.
